Maria manages the cinema Jutrzenka, the last one in the neighbourhood, with no spectators left. Years ago she fell in love with an actor, Korwin, who played the main character in a film called The Hands of a Pianist (Ręce pianisty). The film was shot in this town and Maria acted in it, too. Then, she left her husband and toddler son, but two years later she returned, alone. Now, her grown-up son Paweł comes to town. During a screening of an old copy of The Hands of a Pianist, the mother dies. Paweł takes over her passion. Together with Joanna, Maria's adoptive daughter, with whom he is happily in love, he struggles against the liquidation of the cinema.
