Jack Smith Special at 11. New Horizons IFF (21-31 July, 2011)

Full presentation  of American filmmaker and performer Jack Smith, hailed “king of the underground” is planned as one of the highlights of 11. New Horizons IFF opening July 21, 2011 in Wrocław, Poland.

This will be the first complete public presentation of his rare films in Poland.

Jack Smith, the director of legendary Flaming Creatures and Normal Love, and a central figure of the avant-garde was called “The godfather of performance art” by Laurie Anderson or “The only true underground filmmaker” by John Waters. His works were the first to present the radical camp aesthetics with its open use of sexuality that later inspired such visual artists as Andy Warhol or theatre directors as Robert Wilson. Although Smith’s work has received praise from a number of illustrious figures in art, film, theater and photography, over twenty years after his death in 1989 it remains relatively inaccessible for most audiences due to financial and logistical problems of its preservation, distribution, and exhibition, but mostly for its innovative form and subversive content.

Jack Smith retrospective at 11. New Horizons will consist of the following:

  • a complete presentation of Jack Smith’s film oeuvre: finished and unfinished, ephemeral films
  • live-cinema show “I shot Jack Two” by Uzi Parnes and Ela Troyano (a couple of long-time Smith’s collaborators and friends)
  • a panel discussion with: Marc Siegel, J. Hoberman, Uzi Parnes, Ela Troyano
  • Q&A’s with Jack Smith’s legendary muse, Mario Montez
  • Smith-inspired contemporary film program “Being a Tenant in a Rented World”.

Since there have only been a handful of film retrospectives, art exhibitions, essays and books focusing on the artist published in the past two decades, the Polish retrospective provides a unique opportunity to discover one of the most influential figures of American avant-garde of the second half of the 20th century.

The Jack Smith retrospective at 11. New Horizons, is co-curated by Ewa Szablowska, Marc Siegel and Stefanie Schulte-Strathaus and is being made possible by the courtesy of Arsenal Institute fur Film und Videokunst, Berlin.

The 11.New Horizons Film Festival will be held in Wrocław between 21 and 31 July 2011. Around 430 films (including 230 feature films) from over 50 countries will be shown during the event.
