Film description

Twelve Monkeys rates as one of the most original science fiction movies in the history of cinema. The year is 2035. The remaining survivors of an apocalyptic epidemic disease now live in underground bunkers. In the hopes of finding a cure, James Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent to the past to gather information on the virus that was at the origin of the deadly epidemic. But the disaster cannot be reversed; what happened cannot be undone. The script, by Janet and David Peoples (who also wrote Blade Runner and Unforgiven), focuses not on universal human questions, but rather on Cole’s individual struggles. As he contends with living in several time periods simultaneously, Cole begins to doubt the reality of his experiences – at one point, he finds relief in the idea it may all be the product of psychiatric illness. Gilliam cast Bruce Willis as his main protagonist, but not before giving him a list of ‘Willis acting clichés’ which he forbade the actor from using during filming for the movie. Madeleine Stowe partners Willis in the role of his psychiatrist, while Brad Pitt plays an unstable environmental activist. Twelve Monkeys makes explicit references to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and the script was heavily inspired by the 1962 new-wave short film La Jetée by Chris Marker, although Gilliam has said that he had not seen it before filming what is certainly one of his masterpieces.

Information about director

Terry Gilliam

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 22, 1940, Gilliam was briefly employed by Mad Magazine as a writer/illustrator before he emigrated to England in 1967. Soon after he arrived in the U.K., he began working on Do Not Adjust Your Set, a popular children's TV show, developing his eccentric animated cartoons, which put into motion a hodgepodge of images, including photographs, cutouts from magazines, and famous works of art. In 1969, Gilliam was asked to join the absurdist comedy troupe Monty Python. He began offering his iconoclastic vision to moviegoers with the comedy troupe's first original film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), which he co-directed with fellow Python Terry Jones. Gilliam had his first outing as a solo director with Jabberwocky (1976).

Gilliam's status as auteur has been assured by his strikingly idiosyncratic style, recurrent themes, and insistence on control of all stages of filmmaking. An open hostility towards the studio system has complemented his criticism of mainstream American culture, pragmatically sealed by a thirty-five-year residence in Britain. While he has had to turn to his native country to finance his most recent films, he has continued to denounce Hollywood as an accessory to the 'lie' lived by American society; accordingly, he has declined the direction of many a US box-office hit.
